Our story

I met Juan the summer of 2002 when he was working as a lifeguard for Texas City. I wasn’t exactly interested in him at the time, but I did kiss him, a couple times…

I was only in TC for a little while so I went back to San Antonio to [continue to] live with my dad. At the end of that semester, I moved back in with my mom for good. Not long after I moved back to TC, I saw a familiar face in the hallway: Valarie. Juan’s ‘sister-in-law,’ who was a lifeguard with him that summer. She told me she was having a baby and that I should break up Juan and his girlfriend “the ballsucker” (Sorry Anna!). I laughed her off but later she gave me his number after telling me he remembered me and liked me. πŸ™‚Β I started dating a guy named Alex but he wasn’t exactly the type I go for… πŸ™‚ Well I started talking to Juan over the phone but he didn’t talk much. One particular week definitely concreted us. πŸ™‚

My mom had a new boyfriend (now ex… BIG FAT ex…), N, and I wanted Alex to meet him. N already had a bad impression of him and I wanted to prove this jerk wrong. Well Alex didn’t help me there. Friday night we were at the bowling alley with N and his son. I kept calling Alex to come to the alley. OH NO, he was busy hanging out at a friend’s house. So first it was “in 30 minutes” 30 minutes go by… “Just 30 more” 30 more went by… “Promise, I’ll be there in 15 minutes” 20 minutes pass… I finally told him I was leaving. That was a lie. I called Juan “You wanna come bowling?” “sure, I have to finish here but I can be there in 30 minutes.” 20 minutes go by, Juan walks through the door. First time I’ve seen him since the summer. He’s sooo cute! πŸ˜› He meets everyone and Mom and N want to leave. Chris plays it off like he’s hit it off with Juan and asks mom if he can take us to the house (sneaky kid!). She says yes and that they’ll be home later.

That weekend, Mom wants to go visit N’s family (really, ya’ll just met…) so we do. The whole weekend I would sneak away to call Alex and he was always too busy to talk. Doing NOTHING, but hanging out with his friends. And doing drugs of course. Ugh. I’d hang up with him and call Juan. Juan would actually go to the fridges at work to talk to me, would tell me to hold on while he took care of tables. πŸ˜€ When I got back to TC it was Spring Break and once again, I tried to hang out with Alex, no luck. I invited Juan to the beach and we really hit it off. I liked being around him and I liked the way everyone meshed with him. πŸ™‚ The next day I called Alex to come over. His excuse for not coming over, he was going ‘shrooming.’ I told him to come get his stuff because I couldn’t be his girlfriend anymore.

He showed up and Juan was there, I told him to stand on Amber’s side of the street (my best friend at the time) and I gave him his stuff. He knew Juan was there for me, but I denied it. That night we went on a date and I had fun just hanging out with him. Before he left for the night I asked him what he would tell his friend’s if they asked who I was. He said, “That you’re my girlfriend. Is that ok?” Of course it was. And on March 20, 2003 we were official. πŸ™‚

When I decided to join the Navy in 2007, my mom took everyone out to dinner after going to the mall. Juan slipped outside and was talking on his phone. Of course, I assumed he was ready to find someone new (I was joining the Navy!) and the way he ran away from me when I wanted to hear who he was talking to, I was sure I was right. The week before I left, he took me to San Antonio for 5 days. We had so much fun! We went to the wild animal park, the caverns, sea world and six flags. A couple days before we went home we went to the river walk to eat dinner. After walking alot, we settled on Luciano’s. It must have been near closing because there weren’t many people there.

We ate and towards the end of dinner he kind of played with my promise ring (on my left ring finger) I took his off his finger and put it together with mine (like a wedding set) and said “isn’t that nice!” *cough hint hint* I started to take them off, and as I set the rings on the table, he pulled out a box and said “try this one on.” It took me a while to know what he was doing, but he finally said “will you marry me?” Of course I said yes. πŸ™‚Β Oh and the day he was being sneaky, totally calling the jewelry store to set aside the ring I had been admiring. πŸ™‚

While I was in bootcamp, he wrote me every week. (We could only write back once a week) and we decided that when he came to see me, we would get married. The day after bootcamp graduation, he and I were standing in a Cook County courthouse and said I do. πŸ™‚ He moved out to Great Lakes and we’ve moved to Cali since then. πŸ™‚

The past 7 years have not always been easy. We have had our good days, our bad days, our great days and our horrible days. But in the end, I know that everything happens for a reason and if we had given up when things started to get hard, we wouldn’t be here now.
